We’re farming insects because it is among the most efficient ways to produce protein and fats for animal and pet feed. However, we also make a significant co-product – frass.
Frass is the waste excreted by insects as they grow, as well as their cast-off exokeletons from moulting, as well as undigested remains of the feedstock, fibre etc.
Frass is an excellent natural fertiliser and bio-stimulant. It contains a high proportion of chitin, which is in the insect casings. Plants detect chitin and react to it as if under insect attack, growing stronger to defend themselves.
Frass is beginning to find a market with specialist growers but isn’t a widely used garden or farm product yet.
