What is Biochar?

Allgood Farm Pure Biochar is a natural, climate-friendly compost booster which improves soil structure and root health. Biochar has been used by farmers for thousands of years as a gentle way to increase soil’s water and nutrient retention – creating drought-resistant ‘black soil’ which greatly enhances the effectiveness of fertilisers and boosts crop health.

Today, biochar is also a vital ingredient in the fight against climate change as it fixes carbon in the soil for a long-term reduction in atmospheric CO2.

Biochar is a type of sustainable charcoal made by ‘pyrolising’ waste biomass. Material that would otherwise be headed for the incinerator is instead heated in a low oxygen environment which chars the material without burning it to ash, and locks in carbon that would otherwise escape into the air as polluting smoke.

Allgood Farm Raw Biochar is produced in the UK using sustainable methods. Due to the organic nature of this product the texture varies from small chips down to finer particles, but is always an effective soil conditioner.

How to get the best results with Allgood Farm Biochar

Allgood Farm products are free from pesticides and come in their natural, untreated condition.

<p>Raw biochar will initially absorb nutrients and then slowly release them back into the soil over time. To avoid nutrient loss, biochar can be ‘charged’ before use – mix through equal parts biochar and compost in a bucket, water well and leave to sit for 14 days – the result is a rich, black soil full of nutrients and teeming with a beneficial microbiome.</p>
