Got questions about Allgood Farm?
We’re the new kids on the UK’s houseplant scene, so we expect you’ll have some questions! We’ve done our best to answer some of them here.
We’re an independent UK business owned and run by three siblings – Ben, Jake and Clare. We’ve worked together on other projects over many years, and then in 2023 we decided to take the plunge and try to build something new. You can learn more about our journey on our Meet the Farmers page.
Our main base of operations is a small warehouse site in Huddersfield in West Yorkshire where we make and package our products – we moved here in June 2024. Before that we were working out of Ben’s home office, and the farming side of the business is still based on his little patch of land just outside Huddersfield.
Jake and Clare live in Todmorden and enjoy a beautiful (if a bit rainy sometimes ☔) commute over the West Yorkshire moors!
“Allgood” reflects the ethos of everything we want to be as a business: good for plants, good for people, and good for the planet. We believe you shouldn’t have to choose between great results and responsible choices.
The “Farm” bit comes from our origin story – we started Allgood Farm as an experiment in insect agriculture! The farming side of the business has taken a bit of a back seat while we worked on our soil mixes (anyone else ever get REALLY distracted by a side project?), but we’re hoping to return to it soon, with some very exciting products in the pipeline. Watch this space 😁
Nope, and we like it that way! We started out with just the three of us, but as our soil mixes have proved popular we’ve taken on some helpers. We’re now a small team of six who handle everything from farming and product development, to mixing and packing soils, to posting out orders and answering your messages.
Keeping things small lets us stay consistent, transparent, and friendly.
For now our products are only available online, but we’d love to see Allgood Farm products on the shelves of your local garden centre or plant shop soon, so please ask them to stock us!
We’d love you to buy direct from us here on our website! Buying direct means more of your money goes towards helping us grow our business, rather than paying fees – and we offer the same free shipping you’ll find on any of the big sites 😊
If you prefer, you can also buy our products through Amazon, eBay or Etsy.

Our mixes are crafted in small batches using high-quality, sustainable ingredients. We focus on creating blends that are well-aerated, moisture-balanced, and tailored to how each plant actually grows – not just what’s easy to produce.
Yes! All of our soil blends are developed and mixed right here on Allgood Farm. We research and test each recipe to make sure it gives the right structure, drainage, and nutrition for your plants — whether that’s a moisture-loving fern or a succulent that hates wet feet.
We mix our soils in small batches of 100 Litres at a time. The initial mix is done in a small drum-mixer, but due to the nature of the soil, it’s very difficult to get all the ingredients evenly-distributed that way – so we give every batch a second mix by hand to make sure.
Most of our ingredients are naturally sourced or certified organic where possible. We avoid synthetic additives and rely on sustainable, renewable materials — such as composted bark, coir, and mineral grit — that are kind to both plants and planet 💚
We put a huge amount of time and effort into researching each mix, sourcing the best ingredients, carefully mixing in small batches, and packaging in materials that match our ethos of quality and sustainability.
After materials, packaging, shipping, storage and VAT, we promise we’re not raking in huge piles of dosh – we charge just enough to pay our helpers a fair wage and keep the business growing.
We believe our products are the best of their kind available in the UK – and we think our reviews really speak for themselves 🌟
We research and test each of our soil mixes to ensure they are the perfect fit for the plant or plants named on the label.
Of course, lots of plants will tolerate a less-than-perfect fit – so yes, you may be able to use one soil mix with plants other than those it was designed for. Just be aware that the plant on the label is the one we’ve designed and tested your soil for, so we can’t say how well other plants will do in it.
That depends what you mean by ‘bioactive’. It’s a word that gets thrown around a lot, and definitions seem to vary.
In the original sense, used in the context of creating self-sustaining ecosystems for terraria etc, bioactive soils contain beneficial microbes (bacteria and fungi) and microfauna (tiny creatures like springtails, isopods, or nematodes) which process dead and decaying organic matter to help make nutrients available to plants and keep roots healthy.
Our soil contains lots of organic matter, including vermicompost (worm-castings), as well as biochar and other natural ingredients with biostimulant properties – so they are certainly rich in beneficial microorganisms.
We don’t add any microfauna like springtails or nematodes, but our soils aren’t heat treated or doused with pesticides, so occasional harmless stowaways may naturally find their way in.
As far as we can tell, other brands that promote themselves as ‘bioactive’ are mostly doing so because they include vermicompost – so by that definition, Allgood Farm soil fits the bill. We usually just think of it as natural, living soil!
Our soil is made using natural, organic ingredients. We take reasonable precautions by storing our ingredients indoors away from creepy crawlies, but we do not advertise our soil mixes as “sterilised” or “insect-free.” The only way to guarantee this would be to bake our soil or drench it in pesticides. Both of these methods destroy the natural microbiome of the soil, so it’s not something we plan to do.
If you want to be 100% sure there’s nothing alive in the soil, you can sterilise it by baking at 80-90°C for 30 minutes. We don’t recommend this but it’s up to you.
We do provide a free sample of our insect-powered nutrient boost with orders over a litre. This is our own blend made using waste products from insect-farming, and is rich in all the nutrients your plants need as well as a natural biostimulant ingredient called chitin which helps to boost plant health and insect-resistance.
We’ve tried to make individual mixes for the majority of popular houseplant varieties, but if you can’t find one for your specific plant, please feel free to drop us a message. Some plants are known by a bunch of different names, so the chances are we already have a mix that will suit, and if not we’ll look into adding your plant to our range.
We sell soil by volume (litres), not weight (kilograms).
This is the best way to sell products of this type as it tells you what size of pot it will fill, rather than how heavy it is. The weight of soil can vary a lot depending on moisture levels, but a litre of soil will always fill a litre pot, regardless of how much it weighs.
1 Litre will fill a standard kitchen measuring jug – we recommend this if you only want enough for a single small pot up to around 11cm/4in in diameter.
3 Litres will fill a pot up to around 14cm/5.5in in diameter.
5 Litres will fill a pot up to around 20cm/7.8in in diameter.
10 Litres will fill a pot up to around 28cm/11in in diameter.
Our pricing reflects the fact that a lot more labour and packaging costs go into producing smaller quantities – so you’ll always get a lot more soil for your money if you buy a larger amount.
Nope. Our mixes contain plenty of nutrients to support plants for at least the first few months after repotting. After that, you can start light feeding during the growing season depending on your plants’ needs. Most mixes come with a free sample of one of our homemade biostimulant plant foods too!
Of course! Our compost is designed to be ready to use straight out of the bag, but if you want to mix in your own ingredients, or blend it with a different compost, that’s fine. Just bear in mind that any extra compost you add will alter the structure and water-retention properties of the soil – which may make it less effective.
It depends! Our soil mixes are generally designed to keep balanced moisture while allowing excess water to drain freely. That means you may not need to water as often as you would in other soils.
The vast majority of issues with houseplants are caused by overwatering rather than underwatering – so we highly recommend starting with a less-is-more approach.
For most plants, we recommend bottom watering – add water to the drip tray and wait for it to soak upwards into the soil. When the water stops absorbing, discard any that’s left in the drip tray, and wait for the soil to dry out before watering again. The timing of this will vary depending on the size of the pot, the type of plant, the temperature etc.
Remember, most houseplants come from warm tropical climates. While many require humidity, they generally hate standing in water, and overly wet soil encourages root rot and fungus gnat infestations.
Fungus gnats (little black fruit-fly lookalikes) are one of the most common downsides of keeping houseplants. These critters like to fill wet soil with their eggs, which hatch into tiny worm-like larvae, which in turn grow into the little black flies you see dancing around your plants.
The good news is that, while annoying, adult fungus gnats are harmless to your plants. Their larvae can in some cases attack the roots of very young or sickly plants, but in general they only eat roots that are already damaged or rotting.
If you discover a fungus gnat infestation in your soil, it’s almost always an indicator of overwatering. Adult gnats are attracted in from outdoors by the smell of wet soil and rotting roots. Their eggs and larvae can only survive in the top few centimetres of soil that is consistently damp – but for the vast majority of house plants, the surface layer of soil should be dry most of the time. If your soil is wet enough to sustain a fungus gnat infestation, it’s almost certainly also wet enough to be causing root rot. Your first action should be to allow the soil to dry out, and then adjust your watering schedule to ensure the top of the soil is never consistently damp.
There are various other steps you can take to prevent and remedy an infestation – check out our guide to dealing with fungus gnats for more help.
Most of our soil mixes use a base blend of organic peat-free compost, vermicompost (AKA worm castings – a nutrient-rich compost made by worms), washed coco coir and perlite.
To this base we add a huge variety of renewable and responsibly sourced materials ingredients, tailored to the needs of each plant. Wherever possible we use locally sourced ingredients – for example our pine bark is all from eco-friendly British forestry, our sphagnum moss and seaweed meal is sustainably hand-harvested in Wales and Ireland, and our volcanic rock dust is a by-product of Scottish quarrying.
Absolutely! We sell many of our ingredients separately so you can experiment or tweak your own recipes. Check the Soil Ingredients section of our shop for everything from pumice and lava rock to pine bark and more.
Nope. All of our mixes are completely peat-free. We believe in protecting peatlands, which are vital carbon stores and wildlife habitats, so all our mixes use sustainable alternatives like coir, bark, and composted materials.
