👍 FREE DRAINING GRIT MIX: Established Bonsai prefer a very loose and aerated granular mix over traditional 'soil'. We use a carefully chosen selection of porous grits and pebbles, along with chunks of premium British pine bark, for a blend with long-lasting structure that won't degrade over time, giving your Bonsai the perfect base for healthy root development. Note, this is a soil for established Bonsai.

🌳 HEALTHY FROM ROOT TO LEAF: We designed this mix to balance moisture and nutrient retention, including varied grades of pumice, lava rock and clay pebbles, offering superb aeration as well as imparting a natural boost of mineral content. This substrate contains minimal organic matter, allowing you fine control of your Bonsai's nutrient intake.

🐛 BOOST HEALTHY GROWTH: Orders of 3L or more come with a free sample of our home-grown nutrient boost.

💚 KEEP IT GREEN: Allgood Farm products are peat-free and delivered in recyclable packaging.

What makes Allgood Farm’s soil mixes different?

We believe our mix is the best soil for Bonsai thanks to the high-quality and sustainable ingredients we use.

In the mix: perlite, pumice, lava rock (scoria), expanded clay grit, british pine bark, coco coir, volcanic rock dust

Unlike your run-of-the mill garden centre potting soil, our specialist soil mixes are designed to recreate the natural habitat of your individual plants. That means a lot more goes into them than just compost!

We pack Allgood Farm repotting soils with varied ingredients to reproduce natural soil structure, aeration and moisture balance, with each mix tailored to a specific plant or family of plants. Our soils contain wholesome natural additions like pine bark (from sustainable British forestry), sphagnum moss (hand harvested in Wales), expanded clay (we use various grades and shapes chosen for each mix), and many others.

Our soils are also boosted with bioactive worm castings, a rich compost full of nutrients, which helps to keep your soil’s microbiome healthy.

Allgood Farm soils are natural, living products – we never bake them or add pesticides – because sterile soil is dead soil!

How to get the best results with Allgood Farm Bonsai soil

Allgood Farm soils are living products – free from pesticides and naturally alive with a beneficial microbiome.

When repotting Bonsai, carefully brush away excess soil and prune no more than 25% of roots. Position on a layer of Allgood Farm bonsai mix and secure with wire if necessary. After filling in the rest of the soil, water very thoroughly and keep the plant out of direct sunlight for several weeks.

Allgood Farm soils are rich in organic matter – that’s what makes them so nourishing for your plants! But what’s good for your plants is also nourishing for other things – namely, fungi and bugs.

The odd appearance of a random plant pot mushroom is known to be a sure sign of healthy, nutrient-rich soil. However, fungus can sometimes be a sign that your soil is being kept too moist, and this may attract the dreaded fungus gnat.

For most plants, we highly recommend watering from the bottom, ensuring the top of the soil doesn’t stay damp – this will greatly reduce any chance of infestation as well as helping to avoid root rot.

Also consider a pot-topper – a layer of grit or bark that will look nice and help keep any nasties from your soil.

How much Bonsai soil do you need?

terracotta pots of 4.5 inch diameter holds 1 litre, pot of 12 inch diameter holds 10 litres

We like to give you a range of options when buying soil as we know not everyone has the space or budget to buy a big bag, especially if you’re only repotting one small plant.

  • Our 1-Litre pouches hold just enough to fill a typical small terracotta plant pot of up to 4.5 inches (11.5cm) diameter.
  • 3-litre bag should fill a pot of up to around 6″ (15cm) diameter.
  • A 5-litre bag should fill a pot of up to around 8.5″ (22cm) diameter.
  • A 10-litre bag should fill a pot of up to around 12″ (30cm) diameter.

Like most products, you get more for your money when you order a larger quantity, as the overall shipping, packaging and labour costs are reduced. Please consider whether the price and volume you’ve selected is right for you before you buy.

Please note: Allgood Farm Bonsai soil is sold by Volume (Litres) not by Weight (Kilos).

This is the standard way to sell soil because you need to know how big a pot you can fill with it, not how much it weighs. Your kitchen scales might have a ‘Litre/ml’ setting but this is calibrated for the weight of water and can’t accurately ‘weigh’ a litre of any other material.
